Does Drilling a Hole in a Hard Drive Destroy the Data? Why it Matters in 2026

A business retires a group of computers and drills holes through the hard drives before sending the equipment for recycling. The drives no longer work. Has the data actually been destroyed?

No. Drilling a hole in a hard drive can make the drive unusable, but it does not guarantee that all data on the platters has been destroyed. Portions of the storage media can remain intact and potentially accessible through advanced recovery techniques.

That distinction is especially relevant in 2026. In September 2025, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued the first major revision of its media sanitization guidance in more than a decade. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, Guidelines for Media Sanitization replaced the 2014 version and puts greater emphasis on an organization-wide approach to media sanitization, appropriate controls, and validation.

The updated guidance also addresses this article’s question directly: drilling a hole through a storage device may only partially damage the media, leaving some portions accessible through advanced laboratory techniques.

For IT managers, records managers, and businesses responsible for confidential information, this makes 2026 a good time to reconsider an old assumption: a drive that has been physically damaged is not necessarily a drive whose data has been securely destroyed.

Does Drilling a Hole Destroy a Hard Drive?

A drill will damage a traditional hard disk drive (HDD), and it may prevent the drive from working in a computer. But does drilling destroy a hard drive well enough for a compliance-sensitive disposal process? Not necessarily.

Hard disk drives store information across magnetic platters inside the drive. A drill bit passes through only part of those platters. It may damage the read/write mechanism and destroy data where the bit penetrates, while other portions of the data-bearing surface remain intact.

Current federal guidance addresses this issue directly.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, Guidelines for Media Sanitization, finalized in September 2025, states that a storage medium is not considered destroyed unless recovery of the target data is infeasible using state-of-the-art laboratory techniques. NIST specifically identifies drilling a hole through a storage device as a technique that may only partly damage the media, leaving portions accessible using advanced laboratory methods.

That is a much different standard from whether a drive boots or appears badly damaged.

Why DIY Physical Hard Drive Destruction Creates Compliance Risk

The limitations of drilling holes in hard drives are not limited to the physical damage.

Consider an organization retiring 50 hard drives. An employee drills the drives in a maintenance area and places them with other electronics waiting for recycling.

Months later, an auditor or customer asks what happened to those drives.

The organization may need to establish which drives were destroyed, when destruction occurred, who controlled the drives before and after removal, and what records confirm their final disposition.

A pile of damaged drives does not provide that documentation.

A sound process should account for the type of media, sensitivity of the information, intended disposition, custody of the devices, destruction or sanitization method, and verification or documentation required by the organization.

Drilling vs. Degaussing vs. Shredding

Drilling, degaussing, and shredding work differently. The appropriate method depends on the media, the information involved, and whether the device will be reused or permanently discarded.

Drilling damages specific portions of a drive. Drilling one or more holes may make an HDD unusable without destroying all of its data-bearing material. For that reason, a drilled hard drive should not be treated as proof that the data is unrecoverable.

Degaussing uses a sufficiently strong magnetic field to disrupt data stored on magnetic media. When properly performed with equipment suited to the media, it can be an appropriate sanitization technique for compatible magnetic storage.

Degaussing also has an important limitation: it does not sanitize SSDs or other flash-based media because those devices do not store data magnetically.

Shredding physically reduces storage devices and their components into fragments. For end-of-life media being permanently discarded, physical destruction can be an appropriate option when it matches the organization’s security requirements and the characteristics of the media.

What About Drilling Holes in an SSD?

Drilling holes in a solid-state drive creates a similar problem, but for a different reason.

An SSD does not contain magnetic platters. It stores information on flash memory components. Putting one or two holes through an SSD may damage whichever components happen to be in the drill’s path while leaving other memory components intact.

This is why organizations should identify what they are disposing of before selecting a sanitization method. HDDs, SSDs, backup tapes, optical media, and other storage technologies are not interchangeable.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 emphasizes selecting sanitization techniques and controls based on the sensitivity of the information and the media involved. A method appropriate for a reusable working drive may not be the right choice for failed equipment or media scheduled for permanent disposal.

Physical Hard Drive Destruction Needs a Process Behind It

For an IT department, destroying a hard drive is usually the final step in a longer asset-disposition process.

Before destruction, the organization may need to identify the device, confirm that it is no longer subject to retention requirements or a legal hold, remove it from inventory, secure it while it awaits pickup, and document the transfer of custody.

After destruction, the organization may need records showing that the work was completed.

This is where professional physical hard drive destruction differs most clearly from drilling holes in hard drives in-house. The value is not simply access to equipment designed for media destruction. It is the ability to put the drives through a controlled and documented process.

The 2026 Bottom Line: Drilling a Hole Is Not Proof of Data Destruction

Does drilling a hole in a hard drive destroy the data? It can destroy the drive’s normal functionality. It does not establish that all of the data-bearing material has been destroyed.

The timing matters. Organizations reviewing their media-disposal procedures in 2026 now have updated NIST guidance that replaces standards dating back to 2014. That guidance specifically warns that drilling may leave portions of storage media accessible and places greater emphasis on managing media sanitization as an organizational process rather than an isolated destruction task.

For IT managers, records managers, healthcare organizations, financial businesses, municipal departments, and other regulated operations, that is a practical reason to review procedures that may have been in place for years. The question is not whether a drive looks destroyed. It is whether the chosen method is appropriate for the media and data involved, whether the devices remained under control, and whether the organization can document what happened to them.
